HOW is very popular in my city, there are a lot of meetings here. I'm in SLAA HOW and DA HOW. There's a lot of emphasis on the steps. Each step has a series of questions which people answer with a sponsor. People work out what their bottom and top line addictive behaviours are and there are slip questions to do if you have a slip or relapse. You don't talk in meetings until you have 14 days sobriety, but if you're in a small meeting, usually you can talk. Working the programme means working the steps. I actually love the HOW meetings, they're very powerful. I got incredible support in withdrawal from all the phone calls (you make 4 calls a day, one to your sponsor and 3 outreach calls) and I loved doing a question a day, it focused me and held me as I went through the pain. People seem to get well quite quickly because the steps underpin the meetings so strongly. I found in SLAA HOW that lots of people were in touch with the inner child and lots of people were in therapy. That may be because I'm lucky and live where I do. I don't know if recovery is always like that, but certainly I felt immediately comfortable in HOW because so many people were in touch with the withdrawal process being linked to childhood grieving.
